Alopecia Areata (Plaque Alopecia): Understanding and Acting Early
Alopecia areata, or alopecia areata, is characterized by the sudden appearance of round, hairless patches that are smooth and supple to the touch. This localized hair loss can occur without warning and, while noticeable, is not necessarily permanent.
Often triggered by significant stress, infection, emotional shock or certain medical treatments, alopecia areata results from a malfunction of the immune system that temporarily attacks hair follicles.
Hair around the affected areas may fall out easily, but the roots usually remain intact under the skin. This means that regrowth is possible, sometimes within weeks, sometimes after several months or even years.
Although there is no definitive cure, early treatment with appropriate care can encourage regrowth and limit the spread of the plaques.
